Two of the region’s most significant business events are this week — which makes for a full slate of activities, all dedicated to the expansion and celebration of business in Northern Nevada.
Nevada’s Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology continues its eWeek events, which began Sept. 1 — since its inception four years ago, the event has expanded to a full month — and the University of Nevada, Reno’s College of Business hosts its annual Business Week.
NCET’s eWeek is dedicated to celebrating and encouraging the spirit of entrepreneurship and small-business ownership in Nevada, NCET CEO Dave Archer said.
"Our economy is driven by small businesses," he said, adding that 95 percent of Nevada businesses have fewer than 20 employees.
During eWeek, many regional organizations — ranging from large firms to nonprofits — hold events that include open houses, seminars, and meet-and-greets, which are promoted under the eWeek umbrella. The events serve as educational opportunities for prospective entrepreneurs, entrepreneurs and small-business owners.
"It’s an opportunity for the entire small-business community to come together," Archer said.

Even though the severe recession continues to cast a pall across northern Nevada, entrepreneurial souls see better times ahead.
An annual Entrepreneur Expo in Reno on Friday is expected to draw attendance of at least 1,000 — a record for the five-year-old event sponsored by Nevada’s Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology.
“These Expos are different from other expos because they are designed to provide Nevada’s small business owners access to the resources and expertise they need to grow and to succeed,” says Dave Archer, chief executive of the center.
A new program to teach entrepreneurial skills to graduates and undergraduates at the University of Nevada, Reno, meanwhile, has drawn about 50 students this autumn to learn
about creation and financing of new businesses.
And events throughout the region — including the UNR campus — in coming days are designed to strengthen the skills of folks who are starting small businesses, or giving the move some serious thought.
The Entrepreneur Expo, a free event, runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at The Atlantis Casino Resort Spa. About 100 organizations that provide services to business startups will exhibit, and the event includes seminars on subjects ranging from development of sales skills to protection of intellectual property.

It’s once again time for the annual NCET Entrepreneur Expo, Nevada’s only business-to-small business Expo. This free Expo is open to the public, and is slated for Friday, September 17 from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm at the Atlantis Casino Spa Resort. I’m proud that the event continues to gain momentum each year, and the reason behind the Expo’s ongoing popularity may prompt you to attend this year’s event yourself.
There’s no denying that our economy has been pummeled in the last 18 – 24 months. The trickle-down impact has touched every Nevadan in one way or another. Business owners have seen credit dry up and profits tumble, and employees have become fearful for the security of their jobs – many saw hours and benefits
cut, and others lost their positions altogether. Yet another group of survivors has found themselves charged with carrying double workloads to keep their jobs at all. The result? Fear, mixed with a basic human sense of self-preservation. What does that combination lead to? It often leads to innovation and entrepreneurship.
